Research / Social impacts

A better city.
For whom?

Understanding society should help improve life within it. That means asking whose experience improves, whose voice is missing and how we would know.

01 / Research direction

Start with people.

Belonging

Which places make it easier to take part in city life? Activity can open a question about connection, but it cannot tell us how someone feels.

Access

When and where can people participate? Travel, opening hours, cost and accessibility all shape the experience of a city.

Shared places

How do different groups use the same neighbourhood across a day? What helps places serve more of the people around them?

Change over time

A new pattern deserves context. We want to understand lasting change as well as the short-lived effect of a single event.

02 / Evidence and perspective

Patterns need people.

Observe

What changed?

Look for shifts in collective activity across places and time.

Listen

What did it mean?

Bring in the experiences and perspectives of people using those places.

Evaluate

Who benefited?

Examine different experiences, missing evidence and unintended effects.

03 / An open question

What would make your city better?

Useful research starts with a question that matters to the people affected. We welcome perspectives from communities, researchers and local organisations.
